Will Madsen became Derbyshire's second centurion of the match as they remained on top on day two against Surrey.
Madsen hit 152 as the home side made 452, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (129) adding 17 to his overnight score before being caught at gully by Ricky Ponting.
Chris Tremlett (5-95) took his first five-wicket haul in Championship cricket for Surrey, including Richard Johnson for 72.
Surrey closed 417 runs behind on 35-1, with Rory Burns the man to go.
Derbyshire resumed day two on 232-2 and Chanderpaul was soon taken low down by Ponting being caught in two minds by a rising ball from Stuart Meaker (3-98).
Wes Durston made only six before Tremlett had him caught behind by Steven Davies and Ben Slater followed in the same fashion for seven.
Madsen spent five-and-a-half hours and the crease and hit 17 boundaries, before being bowled by Meaker.
However, Johnson's 135-ball innings contained eight fours and helped push the home side well beyond 400
Surrey's reply got off to a dreadful start when Burns was run out by a direct hit by Madsen, attempting a third run following a mis-field.
But Arun Harinath (13 not out) and Vikram Solanki (10) saw the visitors through to the close.
