Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire: Lumb hits ton against former club

Former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb hit an unbeaten ton as Nottinghamshire had the better of a rain-shortened first day at Scarborough.

The bad weather caused a two-hour delay before former Notts man Ryan Sidebottom dismissed Alex Hales in the first over.

But Lumb (116 not out) and Ed Cowan (47) put on 101 for the second wicket to give the visitors a solid platform.

James Taylor made an unbeaten 12, but bad light ended play early as Notts closed on 177-2.

Play did not get under way until 13:10 BST following an early lunch, and Yorkshire inserted Notts in overcast conditions after Andrew Gale won the toss.

Yorkshire made a terrific start as Hales fell for a five-ball duck, chasing a ball that went across him from Sidebottom to be caught behind by Andy Hodd.

The England Twenty20 opener is very much out of form in red-ball cricket and has made only one half-century in 11 innings this season.

Yorkshire's opening pair of Sidebottom and Steven Patterson restricted Notts to only 11 runs in the first seven overs, but Cowan and Lumb gently guided Notts to 72-1 at tea.

Cowan, playing in his penultimate four-day match before joining up with Australia for the forthcoming Ashes series, hit five fours in a 150-ball innings, before being caught by Gary Ballance off Patterson.

Taylor joined Lumb at the crease and watched on as the opener upped his tempo to reach three figures - his 17th first-class century - and by the close, he had spent 208 balls at the crease, hitting 14 fours.

"The left-hander dug in in typical Tyke fashion, during an opening stand of 101 with Ed Cowan, to enable Notts to shade the shortened day."
