County Championship Division Two, Cardiff

Close, day three: Hampshire 341 & 174-9 v Glamorgan 300-6d

Hampshire 5pts, Glamorgan 5pts

A bold declaration gave Glamorgan a chance of victory in a finely-balanced game against Hampshire.

Glamorgan's Gareth Rees (112) - in his first Championship match this season - reached his century early on day three and shared a fourth wicket stand of 182 with Murray Goodwin (86).

Soon after the pair fell, the hosts declared on 300-6, still 41 behind.

This put the heat on Hampshire, who having slumped to 53-6 in their second innings, closed on 174-9, 215 ahead.

Neil McKenzie (67) and Sohail Tanvir (38) put on 101 for the seventh wicket to lead the recovery after that disastrous start.

Four of their first seven wickets fell for single figures, including ducks for Michael Carberry and Adam Wheater, but McKenzie and Tanvir's efforts kept Hampshire's victory hopes alive.

BBC Wales' Edward Bevan: "It promises to be an exciting final day at the Swalec Stadium thanks to Glamorgan captain Mark Wallace's positive declaration.

"His bowlers reacted well in tearing through the Hampshire top order, but Neil McKenzie and Sohail Tanvir's vital seventh wicket partnership means both teams will have their eyes on victory on Thursday."
