Derbyshire v Middlesex: Home skipper Wayne Madsen hits ton

Derbyshire's Wayne Madsen hit 105 not out and became the first player to 1,000 Championship runs this season, but Middlesex hit back on day one.

The Derbyshire captain reached the landmark on 49 and shared half-century stands with Ben Slater (53), Richard Johnson (33) and Alex Hughes (33).

But Middlesex responded in the final session with Tim Murtagh taking 2-35 to restrict the hosts to 279-6 by close.

Gareth Berg, James Harris, Ollie Rayner and Adam Voges also picked up wickets.

In the morning session, Chesney Hughes hit three fours in making 16, but was the first wicket to fall in the 17th over when he got a leading edge to be caught at mid-off.

His departure brought Madsen to the crease, which he was to occupy for five hours in his third first-class century of the season.

Opener Slater passed 50 for the second time this summer before being caught behind by John Simpson and Shivnarine Chanderpaul followed three overs later for two, when he turned Rayner into the hands of short-leg.

Johnson and Slater helped push Derbyshire towards a second batting point and Madsen reached his ton with his 10th boundary of his innings, but also lost Tom Poynton, who was bowled by Murtagh to secure Middlesex's second bowling bonus point.

Peter Burgoyne (19 not out) kept Madsen company to the close in an unbroken stand of 24.

"Middlesex will be disappointed with their performance in the morning session when the bowlers bowled too short with the new ball.

"There was a greenish tinge that the visitors wanted to make the most of with the new ball when winning the toss, but by the time their lengths improved after lunch the ball had become softer and less responsive.

"Wayne Madsen's century was nonetheless patient as the bowling kept better control of the run rate in the last two sessions and his innings prevented a fightback from the visitors.

"A good morning session should bring the hosts up towards a par score and they'll hope for a better start with the ball in the Middlesex innings."
