Crucial game for United. United must match Seagull’s work rate and intensity. Brighton have a habit of shifting into another gear if needs be, whilst United struggle to take the handbrake off. Ruben Amorim knows if he doesn’t get a result, he’s back to square one and the questions over his future will become all the louder.

Danny Welbeck may be 34, but the forward is showing no signs of slowing down.

The former England international has now scored four goals in his last three games, against Champions League opposition in Newcastle and Chelsea.

His winner against the Magpies on Saturday sent Brighton up to ninth and Fabian Hurzeler's side can add that victory to those against Chelsea and Manchester City this season - and took a point off Tottenham.

While Brighton have impressed at Old Trafford in the past few years, Fabian Hurzeler's men have only won one of their four Premier League away matches so far this season.

2025-26 league results on the road:

    • 2-0 loss to Everton
    • 3-1 win against Chelsea
    • 2-1 loss to Bournemouth
    • 1-1 draw to Wolves

The Seagulls have picked up nearly 70% of their points at the Amex Stadium.

Fabian Hurzeler is the first Premier League manager speaking this morning and he has every reason to be optimistic ahead of tomorrow's game...

Brighton have found Old Trafford a lucrative hunting ground in recent years having not lost there since February 2022.

In fact, the Seagulls have won more games against Manchester United both home and away than any other team in the Premier League since the 2021-22 season - six out of eight meetings.

OK then, folks, that's enough Europa and Conference League fun for one morning, it's time to turn our attention back to domestic football.

That's right, it's almost time for the start of our weekly Premier League managers' news conference bonanza - the highlight of everyone's Friday.

Before that starts, let's have a look at the games they'll be looking ahead to this weekend...

  7. As it stands: Europa League tablepublished at 09:02 BST

    Europa League

Nottingham Forest's victory against Porto means they sneak into the top 18 of the Europa League table.

Aston Villa remain in the top 10 despite their defeat.

Midtjylland, Sporting Braga and Lyon lead the way with 100% records after three games.

Into the bottom half and it looks bleak for Rangers who are planted to the foot of the table with zero points. They are among four teams that are yet to register their first point.

Rivals Celtic rise to 21st after their 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz.

It is, however, still early days and plenty can change between now and January.

Ranagers captain James Tavernier: "It's just a disgraceful performance, it's as simple as that.

"All the years I've been here, the consistency of poor performance that we're putting in, I've not experienced it before.

"Some of us show our aggression after the games, after we get beaten - you expect all the lads to take that in, but we have to look at ourselves much harder."

  9. 'Our takers are clear'published at 08:57 BST

Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 Aston Villa

Emi Buendia misses penalty for Aston VillaImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on Emi Buendia's missed penalty: "Today the responsibility was for Buendia, and normally he has good numbers shooting penalties, but he missed.

"Of course, something can happen, and we will try to get more clinical in the penalty shoot than the last penalties we have had.

"Our takers are clear. Buendia was today, [Jadon] Sancho, John McGinn, Morgan [Rogers] as well can shoot penalties.

"And, of course, Emiliano can repeat, but the idea is try to be so, so responsible about the decision and about the takers who can score."

  10. Villa 'must be more clinical' as penalty problem growspublished at 08:55 BST

Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa may have addressed the goalscoring issues that overshadowed the start of their season, but they are yet to fix their penalty problem.

In fact, it has gotten worse.

A 2-1 defeat at Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League on Thursday ended a run of five straight wins in all competitions, but the result might have been different had Emiliano Buendia converted a 79th-minute penalty.

Instead the Argentine drilled his effort over the crossbar and the hosts held out for a famous come-from-behind victory.

It was Villa's sixth missed penalty in the last 12 months and their second in Europe this season after Ollie Watkins missed against Bologna last month.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Unai Emery's side also exited the Carabao Cup with a penalty shootout defeat by Brentford.

Since the start of last season, Villa have failed to convert more penalties (six) than any other Premier League side in all competitions. Manchester City and Arsenal are closest to matching them with four each.

They've now missed four of five penalties in Europe since returning in 2023-24, with misses coming in all three major competitions.

Villa's lack of confidence from 12 yards was clear when Buendia, despite not having taken an in-game penalty since December 2020, stepped up in place of the already-substituted Watkins.

More from Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner: "You are always told when you play in the Premier League you win the Conference League.

"Stay humble. I don't know if any debutant [is able] to win the competition. I don't think so.

"We will learn from it, the players will learn. It's disappointing, a frustrating night, but maybe the whole environment needed it to stay humble."

  14. 'Understandable to feel frustration'published at 08:39 BST

    Crystal Palace 0-1 AEK Larnaca

    Marc GuehiImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, speaking to TNT Sports: "They scored and we didn't. It's that simple, that's it.

"Every team comes with a different type of game plan. It was a team that sat back. They did well and they frustrated us. Even though they did that we still could have scored.

"It is a new experience for the club and hopefully we have more so that we can grow from in these competitions.

"When it's 0-0 and you feel you should be winning it is understandable to feel frustration, not only fans, but us on the pitch. Everyone had the same feeling.

"It is a good opportunity to learn and understand that these European games are tough no matter who you play against."

  15. 'Small mistakes get punished'published at 08:35 BST

    Crystal Palace 0-1 AEK Larnaca

    Crystal Palace

    Oliver GlasnerImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to TNT Sports: "That is European football. You have to learn from it. Small mistakes get punished and on the other side we had enough chances to win the game. It is not just the story of today but many games.

"The effort was here, we were creating situations against a deep block. We had four or five big opportunities to score and we didn't and we make one mistake and you can lose a game like this.

"It is part of the game. Nobody is blaming [Jaydee Canvot] him, it just happens. The finish was excellent. If you don't score you can't win. We lost a point today. It is disappointing, it is frustrating and it hurts but on the other side we keep going. We have enough games.

"We had enough clear chances and then you lose sometimes. We have to learn from it."

Without the injured Chris Wood, who has been nursing a knee injury, Sean Dyche was robbed of his most potent weapon.

The striker scored 53 goals for Dyche at Burnley and despite his struggles this season, scoring just three times, still represents Forest's biggest threat.

Igor Jesus replaced Taiwo Awoniyi and dropped deep to cause problems for Porto, pulling them out of position, before scoring his third Europa League goal to seal the game from the spot.

Dyche moved to a back four, with centre-backs Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic more comfortable, especially with Elliot Anderson and Douglas Luiz sitting in front of them in midfield.

Anderson was his usual energetic, all-action self, which allowed Gibbs-White more freedom going forward, flanked by Callum Hudson-Odoi and Dan Ndoye.

The widemen were utilised often, even if their end product was lacking at times.

Forest can perhaps slip back into their old ways under Nuno Espirito Santo - compact, counter-attacking and more pragmatic - quicker than adapting to the high press, high-tempo style Ange Postecoglou wanted to employ.

It certainly looked easier, with more fight, spirit and courage shown than under Postecoglou. The Australian could be forgiven for wondering where it was while he was in charge.

It ultimately earned Forest a first clean sheet in 21 matches, since a 1-0 win over Manchester United in April.

What makes Nottingham Forest's victory all the more impressive is the run of form Porto were in going into the game.

The 30-time Portuguese champions had yet to taste defeat in any competition in 2025-26 and sat top of the Primeira Liga with seven wins and one draw.

They had also picked up maximum points in the Europa League league phase having beaten Red Star Belgrade and RB Salzburg in their previous two matches.

Their record in all competitions now reads 10 wins, one draw and one defeat.

    The streak is over.
