Close, day one: Lancashire 295-8 v Hampshire

Lancashire 2 pts, Hampshire 2 pts

Division Two leaders Lancashire lost late wickets to slump from 238-5 to 295-8 against Hampshire at Southport.

After losing Paul Horton early, the hosts recovered to 128-1 but Luis Reece (50) and Ashwell Prince (63) then departed in quick succession.

After a brief recovery, Steven Croft and Andrea Agathangelou (30) followed to leave Lancashire 171-5.

They rebuilt, but a flurry of wickets left Luke Procter (65 no) to guide them to stumps alongside Glen Chapple.

Hampshire gave debuts to off-spinner Bradley Taylor, who at 16 years and 167 days old became the county's youngest ever Championship player, and loan signing Matt Coles, from Kent.

Lancashire, without Simon Katich because of injury, missed the Australian's experience as Reece and Prince returned to the pavilion without converting their half centuries into a major innings.

Agathangelou, Tom Smith and Gareth Cross all made starts but departed for 30 or less, leaving the home side relying on Procter and Chapple to try and eke out extra bonus points.
