Sussex's Chris Jordan deserves England call - Mark Robinson

Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson says Chris Jordan deserves his first call-up to the England ODI squad.

The 24-year-old bowler has been named in the squads for next week's ODI against Ireland and the one-day series against Australia.

"They will be looking at some of the most promising players in the county and Chris is certainly one of those," Robinson told BBC Sussex.

"What he is is an explosive cricketer, especially as a bowler."

He added: "I am sure England will have a look at him and get him among some of the more regular players as they build towards a potential World Cup in 2015."

Jordan, who moved to Hove in December after being released by Surrey, has been a consistent performer for Sussex this season.

The Barbados-born player has taken 51 wickets at an average of 26.58 in the County Championship, as well as 11 in YB40 competition and eight in the FLt20 tournament.

His form saw him called up to represent the England Lions in their three-match series against Bangladesh A last week, when he took five wickets in two appearances at Taunton.

Robinson stressed that Jordan is still learning his trade but believes he has the potential to become an all-rounder.

"He has got unbelievable hands, is a great slip catcher, has great hands in the deep as a fielder and is quick across the ground," he said.

"As a bowler he has got a yard of pace and can change games. In four-day games he has used that to good effect.

"His one-day cricket is relatively inexperienced, as he is in all his cricket. He is learning. He has had some great days and some not so good days.

"He is an exciting player because he can bat as well and is more than useful. He has the potential to be a genuine all-rounder. He is a young man whose cricket is on the up.

"I think it is a good move to get him involved and for him to start to learn what international cricket is all about as England look to build for the future."

Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright, who captained the Lions to a 2-1 series victory over Bangladesh A last week, has also been included in both England ODI squads.

"I'm really pleased for them both," Robinson said.

"It is a great honour any time your are picked to represent your country.

"Luke has been there before but he has been out of the 50-over squad for a little bit of time so he will be delighted to get back in.

"It's Chris' first inclusion in a full squad so it's brilliant news for him."
