Robert Croft and Steve Watkin among Glamorgan candidates

Former England players Robert Croft and Steve Watkin are among many applicants to be Glamorgan first-team coach.

The county advertised the vacancy after director of elite performance Matthew Mott announced he was leaving.

Croft, 43, and Watkin, 49, were part of the Glamorgan side that won the County Championship title in 1997 and are both already on the coaching staff.

Interviews, to be conducted by incoming director of cricket Hugh Morris, are set to be held on 10 October.

Before the job was advertised, Croft said he was "very flattered" to be linked with the role.

An off-spinner, he took 1,175 first-class wickets in a 23-year career at Glamorgan and played 21 Test matches for England. He also scored more than 10,000 first-class runs.

Watkin, a seam bowler and another Glamorgan stalwart, claimed 902 first-class victims between 1986 and 2001 and played three Tests for England.

Australian Mott replaced Matthew Maynard, who resigned in November 2010 after he felt his position had become "untenable".

The former England assistant coach had a spell coaching in South Africa but spent time away from the game following the death of his son Tom, which he said left his family "broken".

Mott had mixed results at Glamorgan but left having guided them to their first Lord's one-day final for 13 years, though they lost to Nottinghamshire by 87 runs in the YB40 showpiece.

They finished eighth in Division Two of the County Championship, with three wins from their 16 games.
