Gary Ballance celebrated his inclusion in England's Ashes squad by hitting 72 not out for Yorkshire against Surrey.
He came to the wicket after Phil Jaques fell for 88 with the Tykes 169-4.
In a dead rubber of a game - , external and Surrey are relegated - Ballance batted with his familiar panache.
He hit 10 boundaries and passed 50 for the 11th time in this summer's County Championship as Yorkshire closed day one at the Oval on 316-6.
Earlier, aside from Jaques's excellent knock, the Tykes top order was guilty of failing to push on once well set.
Adam Lyth, Kane Williamson, Jonny Bairstow and Andrew Gale were all dismissed in the 20s as more than a tenth (34) of Yorkshire's runs came via the extras column.
Adil Rashid (14 not out) reached stumps alongside Ballance, coming in at number eight in what is a batsman-heavy Tykes line-up.
