Ashes 2013-14: England's batsmen shine in tour match

Ian Bell made 77 not out and Jonathan Trott 64 not out as England ended day two of their match against a Western Australia Chairman's XI on 270-2.

Bell and Trott shared an unbroken 133-run stand, the hosts having declared their first innings on 451-5.

Western Australia's top six batsmen all passed 50 as England's seamers toiled in their first match of the Ashes tour.

England's openers put on 100, with Michael Carberry making a fluent 78 and Joe Root 36.

Hampshire's Carberry, who played one Test in 2010, admitted he was surprised to be named in the touring squad but is desperate for a second chance.

"I don't see myself as a reserve anything," said 33-year-old Carberry, who faced 100 balls and hit 12 fours. "I have come out with the mentality to play, all I can try and do is knock on the door.

"I have a lot of first-class experience and I can take that into games with me."

Bell faced 137 balls for his unbeaten 77, hitting 11 fours and two sixes, while Trott faced 135 balls and hit eight fours.

The Western Australia bowling attack was weakened by a knee injury to paceman Burt Cockley, who broke down midway through his third over.

Earlier, England's fringe fast bowlers, widely expected to be fighting over one spot in the Test side, continued their struggles against a second-string state team.

Steven Finn (1-123), Boyd Rankin (1-92) and Chris Tremlett (0-88) claimed only two wickets between them, with the tourists also putting down three catches.

James Anderson was the pick of England's seam attack, finishing with 1-55 from 23 overs.

England captain Alastair Cook missed the match with a sore back and Monty Panesar was ruled out with a stomach bug. Kevin Pietersen, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann were rested.

The three-day match is the first of England's three warm-up encounters before the first Test in Brisbane, which starts on 21 November.
