England limited-overs coach Ashley Giles insists dropping Kevin Pietersen was the right decision despite the Twenty20 series defeat in West Indies.

England's top order failed in both T20 defeats in Barbados as the hosts won the series with a game to spare.

Asked if Pietersen's departure was a mistake, Giles said: "No."

But he added: "Until we turn this around at the top of the order - whoever the personnel might be - that's going to keep coming up."

Pietersen, who was discarded by the England and Wales Cricket Board after the woeful Ashes tour, had played only one T20 international in the previous two years.

England's five-wicket defeat on Tuesday was their fifth in succession in T20s, and came little more than a week before their first game in the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

Giles told BBC Sport: "There is no point in going into a World T20 talking about someone who's not here, because that doesn't work.

"Kevin's not coming back - as far as I am aware - and what we need to concentrate on is improving those personnel."

England won the World T20 in 2010, but have slipped down the world rankings and enter this year's tournament with only a "puncher's chance", according to one-day batting coach Graham Thorpe.

Giles said: "We are going to try and win the tournament but, realistically, we are eighth in the world rankings. We've not played well at all over the last year, so we are the underdogs.

"Sometimes that's a good place to be, but at the moment it doesn't feel like that."

England, who won the one-day series in the West Indies, collapsed to 55-5 in the first T20 and 26-3 in the second.

The final match takes place on Thursday before England travel to Bangladesh, where they will play two warm-up games against West Indies and India.

"Our Twenty20 form has not been good at all," Giles said.

"The disappointing thing is we are just not getting into games. We're getting exposed too early.

"We've got good personnel and we've got to find a formula in that top three. We back these guys to do the job."
