Dawid Malan: I owe Middlesex runs after 'stinker' in 2013

Middlesex batsman Dawid Malan is determined to have a successful season in the four-day format after having "a bit of a stinker" in 2013.

The 26-year-old scored only 387 runs at an average of 21.50 in 12 County Championship matches last season.

The left-hander told BBC London: "I feel I owe the club a few runs.

"We are quite honest with ourselves and know when we are struggling a little bit. It is down to myself to put my hand up and score runs."

Malan's form in the Championship was in stark contrast to his return in one-day competition, where he opened the batting.

He was Middlesex's leading run-scorer in white-ball cricket, with 552 runs at an average of 69 in the YB40 and 351 runs at 39 in the FLt20.

Malan's figures in the County Championship were part of a wider batting malaise at Lord's; Middlesex picked up the fewest batting bonus points of any team in the top half of the Division One table and captain Chris Rogers demanded an improvement at the end of last season.

"It was disappointing from myself and one or two other players that we didn't score as many runs as we can," Malan added.

"Especially towards the end of the year it showed when Chris wasn't around and Sam [Robson] went through a bit of a slow patch. Our bad scores got emphasised.

"Hopefully this year it doesn't happen."

Middlesex finished fifth in the table last season after seeing their title challenge fall away towards the end of the season.

They begin the 2014 campaign away to Sussex on Sunday and Malan is hopeful of another bid for silverware.

"We are trying to build and improve every year as a team and a club," he said.

"The start of every season is an exciting one and something that everyone looks forward to. We have got a good squad of players, a mix of young and old and experience.

"We can challenge and if we all perform and play for each other, anything can happen.

"Whoever takes the field on the first day, it is a massive opportunity to stamp our authority on this year."
