Close, day three: Worcestershire 476, Surrey 206 & 111-3 |
Worcestershire 7 pts, Surrey 2 pts |
Worcestershire seamer Jack Shantry took a season's best 6-53, including a burst of four wickets in 11 balls, as Surrey collapsed at The Oval.
After losing the entire morning session because of rain, Surrey resumed on 134-2, effortlessly adding another 28 runs.
But Vikram Solanki was then run out in a mix-up, by Tom Fell, to trigger the loss of eight wickets for just 44 runs.
Bowled out for 206, Surrey followed on, reaching 111-3, after Zafar Ansari's second unbeaten fifty of the day.
Having finished 77 not out in Surrey's first innings, Ansari was still there at the end of the day on 50, partnered by former Worcestershire wicketkeeper Steven Davies, who, after being dropped on 4 by Moeen Ali, will resume on 23.
Ansari's almost single-handed resistance for a Surrey side badly missing Hashim Amla, the new South Africa Test captain, was in stark contrast to the efforts of the two other Worcestershire old boys on duty.
Former Worcestershire and England spinner Gareth Barry went first ball to Shantry, as did fellow Surrey tailender Matthew Dunn, bowled by Charlie Morris. And ex-Worcestershire skipper Vikram Solanki was out twice in the day.
After being sent back by Ansari on 162-2, Solanki was run out by a direct hit from Fell at square leg to the non-striker's end.
And, when he had a second go in the final session, Solanki became only the second lbw decision of the match, trapped by Joe Leach.
That followed a caught and bowled by Shantry, his sixth wicket of the day, to remove Rory Burns, while Arun Harinath was Surrey's second run-out victim, thanks to some sharp work in the covers by Ross Whiteley.
Having been put back in to bat needing 270 to avoid an innings defeat, Surrey will resume on the final still needing a further 159 to make Worcestershire bat again.
BBC London 94.9's Mark Church:
"Two men stood out on the third day. Jack Shantry caused chaos in the afternoon session with a brilliant spell of left-arm bowling, while Zafar Ansari stood firm.
"Ansari finished unbeaten on 77 and was then at it again at the second time of asking, finishing the day unbeaten on 50.
"The weather forecast for the final day is not pretty, but Worcestershire will be hoping they can get out there and find a way of dismissing Ansari."
