Leicestershire v Derbyshire: Visitors earn first win of season

Paul Borrington's first Championship fifty of the summer helped Derbyshire to victory

Derbyshire won their first Championship match of the summer, beating winless Leicestershire by nine wickets to move off the bottom of Division Two.

The visitors were left chasing 186 to win after Leicestershire were all out for 210 when Alex Wyatt was caught by Stephen Moore off Mark Footitt [3-57].

Openers Moore and Paul Borrington put on 121, before the former was caught in the deep off Rob Taylor for 76.

But Borrington (86 no) steered them to 188-1 with Wayne Madsen (22 no).

The victory, which was largely a result of David Wainwright's career-best 109 followed by second-innings figures of 5-54 on day three, was Derbyshire's first since September last year, when they beat Somerset in Division One.

Leicestershire's hopes of winning the game were hampered by the absence from their attack of Wyatt, who took three wickets in the first innings, because of heel and ankle injuries.

And defeat meant they replaced Derbyshire at the foot of the table because of the defeat, and are still searching for a first Championship victory since 2012.

"Leicestershire's bowling attack was unable to get as much out of the Grace Road pitch as Derbyshire had managed the previous day and so what had looked as though it could be a tricky target proved straightforward for the visitors.

"Already without their two leading wicket-takers, Charlie Shreck and Nathan Buck, the Foxes were further handicapped by the loss of another seamer, Alex Wyatt, whose badly bruised ankle meant he was unable to bowl in Derbyshire's second innings.

"As well as bringing back Shreck, Buck and off-spinner Jigar Naik against Worcestershire on Sunday, head coach Ben Smith will almost certainly look to shake up the batting.

"Matt Boyce is likely to return at the top of the order, and Dan Redfern also deserves a start in a side that needs to work out how to win a game. There comes a point at which changes have to be made for the good of the team as a whole, and heavy consecutive home defeats mean that time has come."
