Paul Coughlin had a Championship debut to remember as the 21 year-old shared a ninth wicket stand of 126 with Phil Mustard as Durham ended the first day on 310-8 at Chester-le-Street.
Mark Stoneman made 51 after they were put in to bat, but found themselves in trouble, thanks to Kyle Hogg.
The 30-year-old seamer enjoyed his best figures of the season as he took 5-62.
But with Durham on the ropes at 184-8, Mustard (64 no) and Coughlin (71 no) saw them through to the close.
Coughlin's score was the highest ever by a Durham Championship debutant batting at number 10.
He came into the line-up after seamer Mark Wood was ruled out for up to 10 days with an ankle injury suffered in training earlier this week.
Stoneman's half-century was the otherother batting highlight for a Durham side still chasing their first win this season after winning the title in 2013..
Hogg's five wickets included that of former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood, who was caught for just one run by Australia's Usman Khawaja, who was making his Red Rose debut.
BBC Newcastle's Martin Emmerson:
"Some cracking bowling by Kyle Hogg had Durham reeling around the lunch interval.
"Hogg had helped himself to the seventh five-for of his career but Phil Mustard put on 57 for the seventh wicket with Gordon Muchall and an astonishing 126 for the ninth with debutant Paul Coughlin.
"They will resume tomorrow two short of a record ninth wicket stand for the club, while Coughlin's 71* is the highest score by a Durham number 10.
"Mustard's 50 came in 126 balls and was probably the slowest of his career but, in the greater scheme of things, it could prove decisive in this game as Durham hunt their first win of the season."
BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read:
"A five-wicket haul for Kyle Hogg was the highlight of what turned out to be a frustrating opening day for Lancashire.
"They had Durham on the ropes at 123-6 before an afternoon fight-back lead by Phil Mustard.
"The pitch did a little this morning but then seemed to settle down, and Lancashire will now need to pass 300 in their first innings for just the second time this season if they are to avoid a first innings deficit."
