Warwickshire v Yorkshire: Visitors on top despite Patel half-century

Jeetan Patel put on 48 for the last wicket with Boyd Rankin - the highest partnership of the Bears' innings

Jeetan Patel's unbeaten 63 kept Warwickshire in the match after a bad start against Yorkshire at Edgbaston.

The hosts were 90-6 after losing three wickets for just one run in the space of six balls but, despite another three wickets for Jack Brooks, the tail end fought back to reach 228 all out.

Chris Woakes, back from England duty, took the wickets of Yorkshire's Adam Lyth and Jack Leaning.

But Yorkshire closed on 82-2 with Alex Lees on 40 and Andrew Gale on 31.

Earlier, Woakes was out first ball, while Rikki Clarke was also dismissed without scoring, third ball, as Warwickshire slumped from 89-3 to 90-6.

Rich Pyrah (3-37) also caused the Bears plenty of problems, none of Warwickshire's top seven batsmen reaching 30.

Before he was caught by Jonny Bairstow off Pyrah, opener Varun Chopra (29) had put on 44 for the second wicket with captain Jim Troughton.

Patel then put on 47 for the eighth wicket with Keith Barker, who made 36 before becoming a victim for Yorkshire debutant Karl Carver on the teenage slow left-arm spinner's first-class debut.

And the highest stand of the innings was the 48 for the last wicket between Patel and Boyd Rankin (11).

Warwickshire spinner Jeetan Patel:

"Obviously when you are bowled out for 228 it doesn't look great. But the wicket has certainly got enough in it for us to go for it in the morning."

Yorkshire all-rounder Rich Pyrah:

"It was a good effort to bowl them out. There's a bit of carry in the pitch - which made a change from Arundel last week - and the ball swung for us."
