Nottinghamshire's Andre Adams torments Lancashire on day one

Nottinghamshire dominated the first day of their County Championship Division One match against Lancashire.

Veteran New Zealand seamer Andre Adams took 4-45 as the hosts were dismissed for 225 inside 70 overs at Liverpool.

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler did manage 52 for Lancashire before he carelessly drove Harry Gurney to Adams at mid-off.

Steven Mullaney's unbeaten 48 helped Notts reach 69-1 by the close of play, with Chris Read's title-chasing team hoping to build a significant lead.

Lancashire wicketkeeper Jos Buttler:

"We're a bit behind in the game. It looked an OK wicket in the last two sessions and it would have helped if we'd got through the first session a little bit more unscathed.

"But it seamed around early on and they bowled well. We also got out in some soft ways in the last two sessions and we have to be critical of ourselves in that respect."

Nottinghamshire seamer Andre Adams:

"We could have bowled them out for 150 if we'd caught our catches but we'll take the score we've got.

"We didn't really know what to expect when we got here but now we'll be looking to bat through the day tomorrow.

"Phil Jaques has emphasised responsibility to us this season and I thought that showed in the way we batted tonight."

"Unquestionably Nottinghamshire's day at Aigburth, but they'll reflect that it could have been better or might have been worse.

"An evening of responsible batting saw Notts maintain their advantage, but Mullaney was dropped three times against his old county. Mullaney's dismissal might have caused alarm in the dressing-room and buoyed Lancashire.

"Notts were guilty of a couple of drops themselves, most notably when Samit Patel spurned a chance to dismiss Steven Croft when he had just three. But Adams - in apparently his final season - took four wickets and two terrific catches to dismiss Lancashire for 229.

"Adams, who turns 39 later this week, hinted afterwards that he may be tempted back next season for a short-term deal, but his demeanour suggested it was a reluctant offer."
