One-Day Cup: Nottinghamshire pair's stand sees off Glamorgan

Mullaney's previous best one-day score was 61

Steven Mullaney and Ajmal Shahzad's unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 93 saw Nottinghamshire to an unlikely One-Day Cup win over Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Set 228 to win, Michael Hogan removed Alex Hales, James Taylor and Samit Patel for ducks to leave Notts 11-3.

Despite 65 from Riki Wessels, they still looked out of it at 137-7 before Mullaney (63 no) and Shahzad (33 no) led Notts to victory by three wickets.

Opener Jacques Rudolph had earlier hit 101 in Glamorgan's 227-8.

It was Glamorgan's first defeat of the competition after back-to-back wins in their opening two fixtures.

But they owed their total to the brilliance of veteran Rudolph, who hit 10 fours in his 131-ball innings, and a late flurry from Andrew Salter (36 not out) after Shahzad's brilliant catch on the boundary to dismiss Graham Wagg off Mullaney (2-26) left Glamorgan 180-8.

Hogan (3-47) soon had Glamorgan in control with the ball as Hales nicked the final delivery of the first over of Notts' reply to Rudolph at second slip.

The Australian seamer then had Taylor caught behind and bowled Patel in the space of five balls to leave the visitors deep in trouble before Wessels began the fightback.

He hit a six and five fours in his 74-ball innings before being run out in controversial circumstances when he appeared to be unintentionally obstructed by Dean Cosker.

Chris Read soon followed to leave Notts 137-7, still 91 short of their target.

But Mullaney, with the support of Shahzad, counter-attacked brilliantly with three sixes and four fours to make his one-day best 63 off 46 balls, including a maximum to see Notts home with nine balls to spare.
