T20 Blast: James Vince sees Hampshire canter to win over Notts

T20 captain Vince was the first batsman to reach 1,000 first-class runs this season

James Vince's unbeaten 93 led Hampshire to a five-wicket T20 Blast quarter-final victory over Nottinghamshire.

Chasing 198, Vince hit 15 boundaries as the visitors won at Trent Bridge to reach their fifth finals day in a row.

Ajmal Shahzad (2-33) took two wickets in two balls and Samit Patel (1-43) had Michael Carberry (31) stumped with his first ball as the home side fell short.

Patel (53 not out), Alex Hales (51) and Riki Wessels (62 not out) had earlier helped Notts make 197-2.

Having won the toss, England T20 openers Hales and Michael Lumb (22) punished some early wayward bowling by Chris Wood (0-38) and Kyle Abbott (0-51) before both were dismissed by right-arm quick bowler Matt Coles (2-36).

It brought Patel to the crease, with Nottinghamshire looking to reach finals day for the first time since 2009, and the 29-year-old hit four fours and three sixes in his 24-ball half-century - much to the excitement of the 11,000-strong home crowd.

Despite the daunting target, Vince took the attack to the home side, smashing Harry Gurney for four fours in his first over, Hampshire's second.

The 23-year-old, appointed the visitors' T20 captain at the beginning of this year's campaign, was then dropped on 20 by Hales at cover off the bowling of Shahzad.

Notts were made to pay for the costly error as Vince reached his half-century with a slog sweep that went for six over deep midwicket off Patel.

Glenn Maxwell (11) failed to make an impact in his final match for Hampshire before returning to Australia, but all-rounder Sean Ervine ably assisted Vince with a timely 39 off 24 balls.

Luke Fletcher (2-26) impressed, bowling 11 dot balls in his four overs and removing Zimbabwean Ervine and Will Smith (9), but the 25-year-old could not stop Nottinghamshire losing their fourth consecutive T20 quarter-final at Trent Bridge, as Hampshire eased to victory with an over spare.

"We did not bowl as well as we could have but they batted pretty well and it was the same in our innings.

"I am pleased to get some runs. Apart from a couple of fifties at the start of the tournament I have had a pretty lean time of things but it all came good today, after Halesy (Alex Hales) put me down early on.

"It is always tough chasing a score like that and you have got to be up with the rate from the off but it is brilliant to get over the line and get to finals day again."

Nottinghamshire batsman Samit Patel:

"We are absolutely devastated to have lost that. We thought we had put a pretty good score on the board but just did not execute our skills properly with the ball.

"I would always rather get nought and the team win. It does not matter what I do if we lose. This is a bitter pill for us to swallow but we have got tome tough characters in that dressing room.

"We are in good positions in the other two competitions and will bounce back."
