The first one-day international between England and India at Bristol has been abandoned without any play due to rain.

England's Alex Hales had been due to make his international debut in the 50-over format, but spectators were denied the chance to see his new-look opening partnership with Alastair Cook.

The abandonment is a blow for the Nevil Road ground, which was set to host its first ODI since 2010.

The second ODI takes place on Wednesday at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.

Gloucestershire CCC chief executive Will Brown

"It's a sad day. We haven't had any internationals here for three years because we've been having a redevelopment with a view to hosting more internationals, so it's very disappointing."

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club chief executive Will Brown told BBC Radio 5 live: "We will lose money.

"We're insured for the ticket sales, but not for things like beer sales.

"People made the call that they'd stay at home, so everything was at a slightly lower level than we'd hoped."

Bristol is not scheduled to host another international match until 2016.
