Adam Lyth's huge century put Yorkshire in command of their County Championship Division One match with Lancashire on day two at Old Trafford.
Opener Lyth batted throughout the day for 182 not out to move the Championship leaders to 398-5, a lead of 118.
He shared century stands with Jonny Bairstow (60) and Adil Rashid (44no).
That amounted to a day of toil for relegation-threatened Lancashire, for whom spinner Stephen Parry took 2-61.
Parry's double strike in the afternoon session, having Kane Williamson stumped for 46 and visiting captain Andrew Gale held at midwicket, reduced Yorkshire to 163-3, still 115 behind Lancashire's first-innings total of 278.
But, Bairstow's eye-catching counter-attack, which included lofting Parry over long-on for six, changed the momentum, with Yorkshire's progress only briefly checked either side of tea when Bairstow and Jack Leaning fell to the spin of Steven Croft and Simon Kerrigan respectively.
However, from 281-5, a visiting lead of only three, Rashid arrived to see off, then attack the second new ball.
All of this took place around the permanent presence of Lyth, the leading runscorer in the County Championship this summer, who steadily accumulated his sixth first-class century of the season.
After Yorkshire resumed on 61-0, Lyth saw opening partner Alex Lees trapped lbw by Tom Bailey before playing second fiddle in a stand of 77 with Williamson.
Amidst the distraction of Bairstow's counter-attack, Lyth - adept at driving through the covers and working off his pads - moved to three figures by pulling Croft for four.
The left-hander's occupation continued through the evening, his 150 brought up with a pulled six off the pace of Bailey.
Lancashire were not helped by an injury to Tom Smith, which has restricted the all-rounder to only 12 overs in the innings.
And, they still have the task of taking five more Yorkshire wickets before batting again on a pitch offering increasing assistance to the spinners.
Lancashire bowler Stephen Parry:
"Its been a tough day for us. We kept it pretty tight but then Jonny (Bairstow) came in and played an explosive innings.
"When we got that second new ball we thought we could nick a couple of wickets but it didn't happen.
"In the whole we've gone about our business pretty well, but obviously we are little bit short at the moment.
"Fair play to Jonny, he came in and changed the momentum and played a good innings.
"We have got a lot of work to do and we've got to match them when we bat again."
BBC Radio Leeds' David Callaghan:
"A fifth Championship century of the season for Adam Lyth has put Yorkshire in the driving seat in the Roses match.
"This was a rock solid performance by Lyth, who must be on England's radar after a magnificent campaign.
"Jonny Bairstow also impressed and when he departed, Adil Rashid provided a splendid back-up service for Lyth as the Lancashire bowlers toiled.
"Yorkshire continued to build partnerships and it was a day of scant reward for their Roses rivals."
