Sussex v Lancashire: Red Rose fight back at Hove

Steve Magoffin took four wickets as Sussex bowled out struggling Lancashire on the opening day at Hove.

After being put into bat and slipping to 34-3, Lancashire's Usman Khawaja (45) and Steven Croft (49) added 62 before falling to Ashar Zaidi (3-36) and Liam Hatchett (2-75) respectively.

Luke Procter's unbeaten 81 saw the visitors - who had stumbled to 192-8 - to three bonus points and 320 all out.

Sussex could not get off the mark in their two overs late on.

The hosts will be hoping to capitalise on a bowling performance which gives them hope of ensuring safety with a victory.

Meanwhile, eighth-placed Lancashire desperately need a win to boost their survival chances, as both Middlesex and Durham have a game in hand.

After losing Paul Horton, Ashwell Prince and Karl Brown early on, Khawaja and Croft rebuilt Lancashire's innings.

But both were caught behind and then both Jos Buttler and Tom Smith failed to make any significant impact.

But, from 148-7, Lancashire's tail wagged again, masterminded by Procter.

He added 44 with Glen Chapple (28), then shared further stands of 68 with Simon Kerrigan (25) and a last-wicket partnership of 60 with England fast bowler James Anderson (28).

"Ed Joyce's decision to ask Lancashire to bat first looked fully vindicated as Lancashire slumped to 148-7. However, as the Sussex attack tired, the visitors took the initiative, Luke Procter leading the way with an innings full of concentration, courage and determination.

"Sussex will take heart that a newly-laid pitch became easier to bat on as the day progressed, and they have a strong batting line-up reinforced by the return of Michael Yardy.

"Lancashire will look to James Anderson for early wickets on what should be another fascinating day of Championship cricket."

"With the Red Rose 148-7 and their season hanging on the line they resolve was tested and, thanks to an excellent unbeaten 81 from Luke Procter and vital contributions from Glen Chapple, Simon Kerrigan and James Anderson, they managed to post a decent score.

"It's only the fourth time this season they've passed 300 and, in doing so, Lancashire have given their seam attack, including Anderson, something to work with going into the second day of this must-win match."
