Will Smith: Hampshire all-rounder extends contract

All-rounder Smith took 20 wickets in the T20 Blast this summer

Hampshire all-rounder Will Smith has extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2017 season.

The 31-year-old, who moved from Durham last winter, has been rewarded for scoring nearly 1,000 runs in the Championship this summer.

He has been a key part of the Hampshire side on the verge of promotion to Division One, averaging just under 50 with the bat this season.

"I'm over the moon to have extended my stay," Smith told BBC Radio Solent.

"The club have been fantastic throughout this first year, and I still feel I've got a few good years left in me."

Smith hit his first century for the club during a record-breaking third-wicket stand with James Vince against Essex at Southampton in June this year.

"Things have gone pretty much according to plan since my move here," he added.

"I feel I've achieved what I wanted to contribute in four-day cricket this year and contributing in T20 and one-day cricket was something I was unsure of before I moved but I'm delighted with how it's gone and I'm excited for the next few years.

"It's a great club and with some guys maturing; it's going to be an exciting two or three years. To be recognised for your efforts is very rewarding and I want to make sure this faith is repaid."
