Pakistan opener Mohammad Hafeez has been ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle injury, dealing another blow to the team's preparations.

The 34-year-old veteran of 155 one-day internationals has been replaced by left-handed opener Nasir Jamshed, 25.

Pakistan had already lost fast bowlers Umar Gul and Junaid Khan to injury.

Spinner Saeed Ajmal, whose new bowling action has been deemed legal by the ICC, could be called up in the event of another injury to the squad.

Hafeez has scored 4,542 runs and taken 122 wickets in ODIs, although he is currently banned from bowling in international cricket because of an illegal action.

Pakistan play their first World Cup match against India in Adelaide on 15 February.
