  1. Post update

So, that's it from me. But don't worry... there's an international cup final from Africa to get your teeth into now. Head on over to our Africa Cup of Nations live text here.

    Goodnight.

  2. Post update

Here's one final reminder that you can select your favourite Premier League goal of the month from January here.

The winner will be announced on tonight's Match of the Day 2, which will be on at the earlier time of 22:00 GMT on BBC Two for viewers in England and Wales, 22:30 for those in Northern Ireland, and 23:00 if you're in Scotland.

    David De Gea

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea: "Although things can get complicated Manchester United never give up! A point in a difficult pitch! We'll keep on fighting!"

  5. Post update

Right we've got through to Leicester and... drum roll...

They have no announcement to make at the moment. Sorry. I was hoping to bring you something more conclusive than that.

  6. Post update

Let me assure you we're putting in plenty of calls to try and firm up this rumour that Nigel Pearson has been sacked by Leicester City. Whether the story is true or false, I suspect the Leicester press officer won't be watching Top Gear tonight.

See what I did there? A seamless plug.

  7. Post update

I've just done a quick search to see if Nigel Pearson ever scored a screamer. The best the internet came up with was a four-yard tap-in against Coventry in 1991. I bet even Nigel has forgotten about that one.

  8. Text us on 81111

After Cheikhou Kouyate scored a cracking goal to put West Ham ahead against Manchester United, we've been asking: What's the best goal you've seen scored by a centre-half?

    Phil Jagielka

Tom, Liverpool: Phil Jagielka's ludicrous thunderbolt equaliser for Everton earlier this season against Liverpool. Dying minutes of the game at the Kop end and one of the greatest ever Merseyside derby goals.

Joe, High Wycombe: Best goal by a centre-half has to be Gary Cahill's bicycle kick for Aston Villa in the Birmingham derby back in 2006!

Pete, London: Another West Ham centre-back, Anton Ferdinand's wonder volley from the edge of the area in the 2005-06 season.

    Kevin Keegan

While we wait for confirmation of Nigel Pearson's departure, it gives the bookmakers time to get their odds right on who might be the next manager. They've currently got Kevin Keegan at number two in the betting. I'd love it if...

  10. Post update

If the Nigel Pearson rumour is true, he would be the fifth Premier League manager in 43 days to be sacked. Silly season.

  11. Leicester going down?

BBC Sport's Robbie Savage assessed Leicester's chances of surviving the drop in his column this week - and it didn't make good reading for Foxes fans. In short, he's predicting relegation.

"The Foxes make too many mistakes at the back and they are not good enough in that department," wrote Savage. "Leicester manager Nigel Pearson brought in Robert Huth from Stoke on deadline day to try to change that but Huth has played only three minutes of Premier League football this season.

"Huth is the kind of character they need but, as I found out when I went to Derby as captain, when you join a struggling team in January, it is very hard to make an impact no matter how good you are or how much of a leader you are.

"I think they are still a couple of players short defensively."

Of course, Leicester also have the small matter of an FA Cup fifth round tie against Aston Villa on the horizon. That game - on Sunday, 15 February at 12:30 GMT - will be on BBC One.

  14. Post update

If Leicester were to change managers, the new man has a tricky job on his hands. They are bottom of the league, four points adrift of safety and their next league game is away at Arsenal. After that? Everton away. Then Manchester City away...

  15. Post update

In terms of Premier League results, Nigel Pearson is Leicester's third most successful manager. Martin O'Neill had a win ratio of 34.9% in the top-flight, Peter Taylor 32.6% followed by Pearson's 16.7%.

  16. Pearson's tangle

Asked why he man-handled Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur yesterday, Nigel Pearson said: "Because he said something to me. I don't have to reveal anything do I? I'm more than capable of looking after myself.

"There's no problem with the player. He's a good player and a likeable lad."

  18. Post update

If you've had a busy Sunday and you're just catching up with the day's happenings, let me help out.

The day kicked off with West Brom coming from two goals down to draw 2-2. Then Peter Crouch scored in the last minute as Stoke and Newcastle shared in a 1-1 draw.

In the day's final game, there was more last-gasp drama as Daley Blind rescued a point for Manchester United at West Ham.

    All the reports are here.

  19. Post update

Nigel Pearson is in his second spell at Leicester City, after taking over in November 2011. In 167 games, he has 78 victories, 35 draws and 54 losses. Hang on while I do the maths... yep, that's a win ratio of 46.7%.

  21. Post update

Here's what Nigel Pearson had to say following that defeat against Palace: "It was a game that we had chances and to come away with nothing is quite tough for us.

"We had plenty of good situations while Palace did not create too much. It's frustrating we can't turn performances into results."

  22. Post update

I'm sure Foxes fans need no reminding, but Leicester were beaten 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace yesterday afternoon. They now have just one win in the last nine games.

  23. "Leicester a soft touch under Pearson"

    606 phone-in

    BBC Radio 5 live

Following unconfirmed reports Nigel Pearson has been sacked as manager of Leicester.

David, a Leicester fan, says: "If the reports are true then my response would be overwhelmingly very pleased. He should have gone earlier in the season. The man did a fantastic job last year, but he is a Championship-level manager. His general persona does him no favours and the league position speaks for itself. We are a soft touch."

  25. How's stat?!

    West Ham 1-1 Man Utd

Here are some key stats from today's game at Upton Park:

    • Manchester United have now lost just one of their last 21 Premier League games away in the capital (W12 D8 L1).
    • West Ham missed the opportunity of winning their home games against Man City and Man Utd in the same season for the first time since the 1985/86 campaign.
    • Marcos Rojo made 14 clearances; only in one game this season has a Manchester United player recorded more (Smalling v Arsenal, 15).

    West Ham 1-1 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking to BBC Sport: "I've seen fantastic spirit and character from my team after going 1-0 behind. I told my players that and thanked them.

"The first half was not good enough, all first and second balls we lost and that's why we couldn't get out of the pressure of West Ham.

"In the second half we showed how good we can be in spite of all circumstances here. That's why I am happy with second half and we could have won, but you never start like that.

"I'm happy for Daley Blind but he also has to play better in first half."

  28. Goal of the month vote

There were plenty of fantastic goals in January, including both strikes during QPR's 1-1 draw with Swansea and a rare Rickie Lambert league goal for Liverpool.

You can select your favourite as the Match of the Day goal of the month vote opens here.

The winner will be announced on tonight's Match of the Day 2, which will be on at the earlier time of 22:00 GMT on BBC Two for viewers in England and Wales, 22:30 for those in Northern Ireland, and 23:00 if you're in Scotland.

  29. Manager reaction

    West Ham 1-1 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking to Sky Sports: "We played very badly in the first half and showed a lot of spirit in the second half.

"We gave away that goal and then we played football but you have to do it from the first minute.

"But what spirit from my team after the goal and I thanked my players for that.

"[In the first half] when we had the ball we didn't play it along the floor. When we lost the ball, you have to win the first and second balls much quicker.

"With Marouane Fellaini you have to change your playing style. That's what we did and because of him we created lots of chances. I'm pleased that we have a draw here."

After Cheikhou Kouyate scored a cracking goal to put West Ham ahead, we've been asking: What's the best goal you've seen scored by a centre-half?

Colin Cox: Alan Kernaghan - 1994 for Man City v Leicester. Got the ball in in own half, took on three defenders and then lobbed from 40 yards.

Matt Fallon: Best centre-half goal has to be Tony Adams against Everton. Steve Bould over the top and a crisp left foot finish. 4-0 and the Premier League title.

Chris Oakley-White: Has to be Philippe Mexes' goal v Anderlecht. That bicycle kick.

    West Ham 1-1 Man Utd

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce speaking to BBC Sport: "A win would have been nothing more than we deserved if we had won.

"It's a great shame we conceded the goal but a fantastic performance which entertained the crowd - I always respect the point against one of the big boys even though they got the goal late.

"Cheikhou Kouyate was playing centre-back for the first time and if you look at quality of his goal - it was fantastic."

  35. Manager reaction

    West Ham 1-1 Man Utd

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, speaking to Sky Sports: "The lads are absolutely gutted and so they should be. It was a fantastic performance and I thought we were going to see it through but it wasn't to be.

"We just needed to find the second goal and didn't manage to even though we had chances.

"In the end, we couldn't cope with long ball United - it was thump it forward and see what happens. It's not how you normally see United play but it got them the point in the end.

"If you look at the amount of saves David De Gea made today he is probably just as worthy of them getting the draw as Daley Blind getting the equaliser."

    West Ham manager Sam Allardyce
  36. Manager reaction

    Newcastle 1-1 Stoke

Stoke boss Mark Hughes: "At a key point in game the referee hasn't made a brave or strong decision.

"He has allowed Jack Colback to stay on when really he should have got a second yellow card and gone off. That would have made the difference and possibly allowed us to go on and win.

"As it was, he was able to stay on the field of play and he has ended up scoring the goal that possibly might have allowed us to not get anything from the game.

"From that point of view, we are grateful for goal at the end but that was the least we deserved."

  37. Manager reaction

    Newcastle 1-1 Stoke

Newcastle manager John Carver played down the controversy over Jack Colback not being sent-off:

"It wasn't a classic and I thought we had stolen the three points when we got the goal. I couldn't see where they were going to get a goal from and, like I say it was from our stupidity," he said.

"I'm never going to take away Jack Colback's competitiveness. He's a real competitor and has been a great signing for this football club.

"There were lost of tackles going in and I thought the referee handled it very well. I'll speak to him (Colback) but I won't take it away from him."

  39. Player reaction

West Ham midfielder Mark Noble: "It's feels like a loss. It shows how far we have come that we are gutted we drew with Manchester United.

"In many spells I thought we were the better team and just couldn't hold out until the end.

"You can't switch off against these top teams because they will punish you and that's what happened."

  40. Post update

    How much did they earn?

    Wayne Rooney

Despite an all-star forward line, Manchester United had to rely on a last-gasp goal from Daley Blind to rescue them a point at West Ham. But just how much did some of United's attacking stars earn for their efforts today? Our wages calculator has the answers (although you may not like them)...

Angel Di Maria is about £2,500 better off after the 90 minutes at Upton Park, Radamel Falcao will be taking home roughly £2,400 for his efforts today, while Wayne Rooney has pocketed approximately £2,600.

Punk Paultje: Not sure I've seen a better goal by a centre-half than Cheikhou Kouyate's but I did see John De Wolf score the perfect hat-trick away at Port Vale.

  207. Manager reaction

    Burnley 2-2 West Brom

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "We've been outsized in a lot of games this season. You can see the size of some of these teams so we pride ourselves on the organisation and we have to use that wisely - and we have done for most of the season.

"We've been punished today. Our honesty has hurt us today. Dave Jones is as honest as the day's long and he has an elbow in the back [for the corner from which Brown Ideye scored West Brom's equaliser], he doesn't go down like many do, they get a free header."

"He's a fine talent, there's no two ways about it and I can see why there's certain people in the media asking about England call-ups, not necessarily to start but in the squad and you can see why.

  323. On the title race

    MOTD2 Extra

Discussing the title race in the Premier League, with Chelsea now seven points clear of Manchester City at the moment.

BBC Sport pundit John Hartson: "There is a softness about Manchester City at the moment. They are missing people at the Cup of Nations but they still have millions of pounds of talent available. They played ever so well at Chelsea and you think they are back and then they have a result like they did drawing 1-1 against Hull on Saturday. Chelsea had no Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa at Villa but still got the job done, winning 2-1 - there is the toughness that City do not have."

BBC Sport commentator Simon Brotherton: "Manchester City did not get out of second gear, it was a very stodgy performance against Hull. Man City are playing well below par at the moment - and if you are going to win the league you need to be winning matches against Hull. They do not have much room for an off day now."

Football writer Amy Lawrence: "There is a red herring element about people saying City are not the same when Yaya Toure is not playing. If you look at stats about players chipping in with goals from midfield - Nasri and Navas have not scored in the league this season."

BBC Sport commentator Simon Brotherton: "He's got that confidence. He backs himself. He is giving defenders something else to think about. At present, he embodies what Tottenham are all about in his relentless hunger for the ball."

There was also frustration in the transfer market for West Brom, with manager Tony Pulis admitting he missed out on a couple of major deals.

"It's certainly going to be tougher now, yes, because we've missed out on one or two players we thought we had a good chance of getting," said Pulis.

"It was always going to be difficult because of the short period of time and we only had four weeks really to sort the players out and get the players in that we needed.

"We're pleased with Darren Fletcher, and Callum McManaman has looked a lot stronger this week in training. But there were one or two other areas we needed to strengthen."

  376. Post update

Burnley v West Brom (12:00 GMT)

Burnley, like many in the Premier League, did very little business during the January transfer window. The Clarets' only transfer window business was a permanent deal for Manchester United defender Michael Keane as they missed out on their midfield targets.

"We haven't got the backers some of the teams have got - even in the Championship," said manager Sean Dyche earlier this week.

"It's a tough market out there, a really tough market, and even going into the window and going into the summer I made it quite obvious that this is not a million or two market, this is tens of millions to really, really affect it heavily."

But, as Sean Dyche points out, the Clarets are playing a bit better these days...

"That was a long time ago," the manager said. "We're a different animal. We're pleased with the growth in the side, the way they're adapting to Premier League football.

"It's a completely different occasion now, with the new manager (Tony Pulis), someone I know and I respect and a genuine good guy. They'll be well drilled and organised."

The striker is on the bench so Stephane Sessegnon comes in to give support to striker Victor Anichebe. Darren Fletcher comes in for James Morrison in midfield to make his debut for the club and captains the side. Chris Baird come in to defence in place of Andre Wisdom.

Burnley striker Danny Ings and West Brom counterpart Saido Berahino are two players who are catching admiring glances from higher profile clubs but are deal with their rise a little bit differently.

Let's start with Mr. Berahino. Now, he's been linked with the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool but thinking about a possible move is one thing but another saying it - a problem our Saido doesn't have.

Fresh from his drink driving ban, instead of keeping his head down he hasn't exactly enamoured himself to anyone at his current club by saying "he hoped to move on to bigger things". So. it's no surprise he's been dropped to the bench for today's game.

Let's hope there's not too many high balls played at Turf Moor as, from the pics we can see, it's very foggy at the ground.

Dan: Needed a point to stay up. Drawing in the 88th minute when the ref gives a penalty for nothing. Scored. Relegated.

Djokovic!: I scored an own goal.

David R Pollard: My team scored eight goals in last-day dogfight. Unfortunately it was five-a-side and the other team scored 20!

  388. Fulham want Bruce

    Newspaper round-up

The Sun (subscription required) are reporting that Hull boss Steve Bruce, who is trying to steer his side away from relegation, will be offered £15m to take Fulham into the Premier League, and that West Ham's Sam Allardyce is another candidate for Cottagers owner Shahid Khan.

  389. Jovetic on way to Italy?

    Newspaper round-up

    Daily Star

Manchester City forward Stevan Jovetic has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Champions League in place of new signing Wilfried Bony.

Jovetic came on in the 1-1 draw with Hull on Saturday but struggled to make an impact. The Daily Star on Sunday say Juventus are determined to land Jovetic at the second attempt - seven years after failing to capture his signature.

This morning we want to know when you've been involved in a relegation battle with your team. Did you score the goal that kept your team up? Or concede one that saw them go down? Did you avoid the drop? Or was it the Great Escape?

George Rigden: Avoided relegation on last day, came from 5-0 to draw 5-5, then relegated via points deduction for fielding illegitimate player.

Justin: Scored the winner to help my team beat the drop, finishing my hat-trick with a Marco van Basten-style volley. Since then he's my hero.

Anthony Upton: Drafted in when half the team went on a 'lads holiday' and scored to keep them up.

  391. BREAKING TEAM NEWS

Burnley v West Brom (12:00 GMT)

West Brom striker Saido Berahino is dropped to the bench, while Burnley are unchanged for a 10th league game on the trot.

  392. 'It could be too late for Man City'

    Man City 1-1 Hull City

    Match of the Day

    Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero

Former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy: "The gap at the top of the table is growing and the gap by the time Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony return from the Africa Cup of Nations...it could be too late. They signed a player who can't play until February and it was a risk."

Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas: "Manchester City have have been poor at home this season. They just didn't seem to get going against Hull and they were careless. There were mistakes all over the pitch and Hull forced them into those situations."

Jack Sanders: Needed three points from last game in the league to stay up, got those three points in a 2-1 win, but were relegated on goals conceded.

  394. Man City slip-up

    Man City 1-1 Hull City

    Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero

Manchester City are finding plenty of banana skins to slip on at present and yesterday was no different. Manuel Pellegrini's side went behind to Hull before needing a late James Milner free-kick to rescue a draw for them.

The result left the champions without a win in four top-flight games and seven points behind Chelsea, whose march to the title continued with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

  395. Coming up on BBC radio

    BBC Radio 5 live

There will also be updates from Newcastle's home game against Stoke, which gets under way at 14:05, before full match coverage of Manchester United's trip to West Ham, a 16:15 kick-off.

And later this evening you can have your say on all the big football stories on 606 with Ian Wright and Kelly Cates from 18:10.

  396. 'This kid can make that position his own'

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy

    Match of the Day

Liverpool's Jordon Ibe in action against Everton

"Jordon Ibe was fearless. He played on the right hand side, he was positive, energetic and productive. This was his second start in the Premier League. It wasn't a League Cup game against lesser opposition, it was the Merseyside derby. Obviously Everton were without Leighton Baines but he was absolutely fantastic. This kid can make that position his own."

  397. Impressive Ibe

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool's Jordon Ibe

Saturday's other derby between Everton and Liverpool didn't quite live up to the hype as it finished goalless.

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard was appearing in his 33rd and most likely last league game against Everton but it was a player competing in his first senior Merseyside derby in Jordon Ibe who caught the eye.

Ibe, making only his second league start for Liverpool, came closest to breaking the goalless deadlock with a strike against the post.

Chris Humphris: Summer 2013, my club cricket side lost 14 of our 16 matches. The other two were rained off. Yes, we finished bottom.

Alfie Cauldwell: Bottom with five games left, we won them all and finished mid-table.

Mike Tyler: Got relegated, then league reorganised from three to two divisions, we got reinstated to Division One, then the club folded anyway!

  399. 'Build England team around Kane'

    Tottenham 2-1 Arsenal

    Match of the Day

    Tottenham forward Harry Kane

Former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy: "Harry Kane is so young, but he's so powerful. I'm struggling to see a weakness in the lad's game. Not just selected [for England], but build the team around him. His second goal...that's probably the best header I have seen this season. He's a big game player. He scored two against Chelsea and he's now got two against Arsenal. But Tottenham need to keep Harry Kane fit because if he's not fit, where are their goals going to come from?

Tottenham 2008 League Cup winner Jermaine Jenas: "His second goal was Shearer and Drogba-esque. You don't see those goals any more."

  400. Kane for England

    Newspaper round-up

In the Daily Mail, former England boss Glenn Hoddle says in-form Spurs striker Harry Kane "has to be in the England squad next month. He's made the step at every level. He has a little bit of everything. He can play in the pocket and up top and his movement is very cute."

  401. Kane for England

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may have been on the losing side after Harry's Kane's double for Tottenham but he came up with a nice take on whether England manager Roy Hodgson should pick the striker for his next squad.

Hodgson was in attendance at White Hart Lane as he continues his preparations for England's next European Championship qualifying fixture against Lithuania on 27 March, before a friendly against Italy four days later.

Kane has scored 22 goals in 34 matches this season and Wenger says: "When you have scored the number of goals he has scored, if you don't put him in there somebody else will give him a passport."

  402. 'I never shed tear'

    Newspaper round-up

    Independent

It's no surprise the Tottenham striker Harry Kane's joyous face is dominating the back pages after his two goals in his side's derby win over Arsenal.

The Independent also has an interview with West Brom's new signing Darren Fletcher, who joined the club from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

"You accept squad rotation and all these different things I had done over the years but when you are on the bench week upon week it does become difficult when you feel you have got so much to give," says Fletcher on his move.

"I never shed a tear, no. Although I've been at United my whole life, I left Scotland to come to Manchester United and now I'm moving on to the next chapter."
