County Championship: Rankin takes six wickets to outclass Hants

Boyd Rankin played one Test for England against Australia but managed to take just one wicket

Paceman Boyd Rankin took a career-best 6-75 as Warwickshire bowled Hampshire out on the first day at Edgbaston.

The 30-year-old Irishman and Chris Wright (3-75) reduced newly promoted Hampshire to 178-5.

Adam Wheater and Danny Briggs (48) shared a 103-run partnership for the eighth wickets as the visitors rebuilt.

But after Wheater fell to Keith Barker for 74, their last three wickets went for 10 runs as they were all out for 319, with Warwickshire 14-0 at stumps.

Hampshire began the match confidently as Jimmy Adams (53) and Liam Dawson (38) saw them to 89 without loss at lunch.

However, Dawson was trapped lbw by Wright in the second over after lunch before Rankin picked up his first wicket as Jimmy Adams holed out 13 balls after reaching his half-century.

James Vince only lasted eight balls as Rankin trapped him lbw, before bowling Will Smith (12) and having Sean Ervine caught for a duck by Rikki Clarke.

Two overs later Rankin dismissed Gareth Berg to claim his first five-wicket haul of the season.

Hampshire, who suffered a 92-run loss to Sussex in their first Championship match of the summer, struggled to cope with Rankin and Briggs was his final victim of the innings as was trapped lbw - two short of a half century.

Warwickshire bowler Boyd Rankin:

"It is a pretty good deck so overall I think we are pretty happy with that score.

"It was a pretty good day for us, now we have just got to bat well.

"There was a bit of swing all along but we have got a good batting line-up so hopefully we can put a big score on the board."

Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein:

"We would have batted first if we had won the toss. I think it is a very good wicket. Not a flat wicket, just a good wicket.

"After the start we had, we had a disappointing middle session with batters getting in but not making a big score, which was a little bit like how it was in our last game.

"Wheats batted really well and Briggsy was positive and that got us back in the game. But I think a total around 300 made it a medium day for us."
