Somerset v New Zealand: Tourists take control in Taunton

New Zealand assumed a strong position after two days of their tour match against Somerset at Taunton.

Bowled out for 237, the Black Caps dismissed Somerset for 204, with left-arm seamer Ben Wheeler taking 5-18.

New Zealand went on to reach 149-3 at the close, for a lead of 182, with two days of the game remaining.

Opener Tom Latham scored 57 and Mitchell Santner was 70 not out when nightwatchman Neil Wagner was dismissed off the final ball of the day.

Tim Groenewald took two of the wickets to fall, to add to his four scalps in the first innings as New Zealand added 35 runs to their overnight score of 202-7.

But he was outshone by Wheeler, a 23-year-old making his debut for the Black Caps, who recorded figures of 11-6-18-5.

Wheeler is one of several new faces in a New Zealand side missing a number of first-choice players.

Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Matt Henry, Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee and Kane Williamson, are all still playing in the Indian Premier League, while Martin Guptill was missing after he suffered a side strain while playing for Derbyshire.
