Leicestershire are closing in on their first Championship win since 2012 after Charlie Shreck took 5-71 against Essex.

Essex began the day perilously on 43-2, but reached 276 thanks largely to Tom Westley (97) and Ryan ten Doeschate (77), who put on a partnership of 128.

Shreck dismissed ten Doeschate before running through the tail to leave a victory target of 163.

Angus Robson and Matthew Boyce took Leicestershire to 55-0 at stumps, needing 108 more to win.

The Foxes' last County Championship win came in the final game of the 2012 season against Gloucestershire, but barring a spectacular batting collapse they will pick up a long-awaited victory on the final day.

Westley had frustrated them for nearly four hours and his dismissal - trapped lbw by Ben Raine (3-59) - opened the door for Shreck to blow away the lower order.
