County Championship: Lancashire made to struggle by Craig Miles

Craig Miles took five wickets as he led a decent effort from Gloucestershire's bowlers against Lancashire on day one.

Miles (5-61) removed Paul Horton early then bowled Karl Brown (57) after lunch as the visitors were reduced to 106-4.

Lancashire captain Steven Croft hit 11 fours in his 65 but, having gone LBW to Miles, their lower order rallied, eventually being bowled out for 275.

Gloucestershire got off to a poor start, losing openers Chris Dent and Will Tavare, as they closed on 15-2.

After Croft was out LBW, Lancashire added 85 runs for the last three wickets to claim two batting bonus points.

That included an unbeaten 29 off just 13 balls, including a six and five fours, from first team player-coach Glen Chapple, batting at number 11.

Chapple came out of semi-retirement at the age of 41 to play, as the Division Two leaders opted to pick an extra seamer, leaving out spinner Simon Kerrigan.

Gloucestershire will start the second day 260 runs adrift, with nightwatchman Miles and Michael Klinger at the crease.

Gloucestershire all-rounder Craig Miles:

"I am trying to keep things simpler this season by keeping the ball in good areas and maintaining pressure on the batsmen.

"I felt we did that as a bowling unit. There was some help from the pitch with the new ball, but after that we had to work hard for our wickets.

"Lancashire are an attacking side and we knew that if we could dry up the runs and be patient we would get our rewards."

Lancashire head coach Ashley Giles:

"If we can bowl well in the morning we will put Gloucestershire under pressure.

"We have gone in without a spinner because of the nature of the pitch. We picked one at Leicester and he ended up bowling one over.

"We also wanted to get Glen Chapple back into cricket. He is best when fresh and to come out of semi-retirement to bat as he did says everything about him."
