County Championship: Yorkshire win despite Stuart Broad defiance

Yorkshire moved up to second in the table as they swept away Notts despite a superb bowling display by birthday boy Stuart Broad at Headingley.

The England paceman removed day two centurions Andrew Gale (148) and Jack Leaning (110) and finished with 7-84.

But Yorkshire's 430 all out gave them a 206-run lead and the visitors were soon in trouble in their second innings.

Ryan Sidebottom took 4-39 as Notts were dismissed for 198, despite 50 by Broad, to lose by an innings and eight runs.

Yorkshire's ruthless bowling performance put them just nine points behind leaders Durham in the County Championship, with a game in hand.

After Sidebottom removed both Notts openers with just 20 on the board, only Michael Lumb (47) offered prolonged resistance until Broad, on his 29th birthday, and Ben Hilfenhaus came together at the fall of the eighth wicket.

Broad hit a six and eight fours as they added 60, but after reaching his half-century off 41 deliveries, he was caught at mid-wicket by Gale from James Middlebrook's off-spin.

And the end came in Middlebrook's next over when Jake Ball, having cleared the rope from the previous delivery, was caught by Sidebottom at long-off.

Broad was the star performer earlier in the day, trapping Gale lbw in his first over and then bowling Leaning as Yorkshire lost three wickets for 23 runs after resuming on 302-3.

Tim Bresnan batted well either side of lunch for an unbeaten 52, including nine fours, but after Broad ended a 50-run eight-wicket partnership with Steve Patterson (23), he then polished off Yorkshire's innings with the wickets of Jack Brooks and Sidebottom in successive balls.

Stuart Broad has now taken 508 first-class wickets during his career at an average of 27.95

Jonny Bairstow replaced Andrew Hodd in Yorkshire's side after returning from England duty but was bowled for 15 by Luke Wood

Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie:

"That was fantastic. I cannot speak highly enough of the lads.

"The way we went about it in the first and second innings with the ball, I think the lines and lengths were outstanding.

"With the bat, that partnership between Andrew Gale and Jack Leaning was sensational and some good batting down the order from Tim Bresnan and Steven Patterson gave our innings a little bit extra which was great.

"It was a ruthless performance. We have had some inconsistent days and sessions but we are playing some good cricket."

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mike Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham:

"I can't defend our batting today, there were some pretty soft dismissals.

"We have to accept we were outplayed over three days. We showed a lack of technique.

"I would like to think our confidence is not too low. We got 400 last match and runs before that.

"It's difficult for sure and we're in an unusual situation, but we have to see this is the bottom and as low as we can be and we have to make sure it does not stay like this."
