World Twenty20 Qualifier: United States ease to win over Jersey

The USA beat Jersey with more than four overs to spare

Jersey's chances of making the World Twenty20 took a blow following a five-wicket loss to the United States in their latest qualifying game at Bready.

The Channel Islanders were all out for just 87 in 17.3 overs, with only three batsmen making double figures.

USA wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson took four catches and made two stumpings.

Dodson went on to make 31 at the top of the order and was named man of the match as the United States eased to victory with 4.2 overs to spare.

"We're really just very disappointed with what we produced with the bat," Jersey coach Neil MacRae told BBC Channel Islands.

"We know we're capable of a lot better and it's still only a few days ago that we were brilliant against Hong Kong.

"I thought the players fought back really well in the field and we finished the game strongly, but clearly 87 wasn't enough with the bat."

Jersey had gone into the game lying fifth in the Group A table after their opening two fixtures - a stunning nine-wicket victory over Hong Kong followed by a 24-run loss to Papua New Guinea.

Having been put into bat by the Americans, openers Ed Farley and Pete Gough along with teenager Jonty Jenner were all out in the early overs as Jersey were restricted to 28-3 from their first five.

Anthony Kay (18) and Charles Perchard (18 not out) top-scored for the Channel Islands side, while Dodson stumped Ben Kynman and Rhys Palmer late in the innings.

The USA, looking for their first win at the tournament, made a steady start, rotating the strike and although they were unable to find the boundary with any regularity, Dodson and fellow opener Fahad Barber (30) knocked off the bulk of the runs.

Twice Jersey took two wickets in two balls, with Nat Watkins (3-15) the pick of the bowlers, but the Americans would not let the match slip.

This is the most high-profile tournament at which Jersey have competed in their history, and they will need to be in the top four in their group come the end of the stage if they are to have any chance of making it through to the World T20 in India next year.
