Ross Whitley has a strike rate of 176.87 in this season's T20 Blast competition

Big-hitting Ross Whiteley will demand attention from the England selectors for one-day honours if he continues his explosive form, says Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell.

Whiteley, 26, smashed 11 sixes in his unbeaten 91 off 35 balls as his side thrashed Yorkshire to all but seal a place in the T20 Blast quarter-finals.

"You don't see anything like Ross managed every day," Mitchell said.

"The England selectors will be looking at him in time."

Whiteley came to the wicket with Worcestershire struggling on 63 for 4, but put on 61 with Mitchell and then helped blast 67 of the last four overs as the visitors went on to seal a 74-run win at Headingley.

Whiteley's broad bat

Ross Whiteley's 11 sixes in an innings is the most by a Worcestershire player in T20 cricket. He beat his own record of nine maximums set against his old side Derbyshire last summer.

Only four players - Graeme Hick, Vikram Solanki and Ben Smith have scored more runs in a single innings for the county.

Whiteley now has 25 sixes in the T20 this season - only Luke Wright (26) and Chris Gayle (29) have hit more.

"Before I went out we spoke in the dug-out about what a good score was and we thought 150 to 160. Mitch did a great job and just allowed me to play my natural game," Whiteley told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I had a hit in the nets and I was hitting it really clean and I was just hoping I could take that into the game - thankfully I did."

Worcestershire's eighth win of the competition was their fifth successive victory away from home and virtually booked their spot in the last eight.

That place will be guaranteed if either Nottinghamshire fail to win at Lancashire on Wednesday or Worcestershire beat Derbyshire on Friday in their penultimate game.
