Alex Hughes hit a maiden first-class century as Derbyshire put in a fine batting display against Northants on the first day at Northampton.

Hamish Rutherford scored 60 to take the visitors to 123-1, but wickets then tumbled as Derbyshire fell to 196-6.

All-rounder Hughes batted well with the tail, as he reached 111 not out off 146 balls, to take his side to 361 all out.

Mark Footitt then had Ben Duckett caught by Billy Godleman first ball as the hosts reached 6-1 at stumps.

Hughes's marvellous attacking century, which included 18 fours, changed the momentum of the innings following the mid-afternoon collapse which was sparked by Rory Kleinveldt (4-99).

However their cause was helped by Northants' wayward bowling which saw them concede 50 extras including 14 no-balls.
