County Championship: Yorkshire on course to beat Worcs

Division One leaders Yorkshire look set for victory over Worcestershire after forcing the visitors to follow-on during the third day at Scarborough.

Worcestershire ended 221-6 at stumps, leading by just 71 runs.

They were 280 all out in their first innings, one run short of the target needed to make Yorkshire bat again.

Jack Brooks claimed two second-innings wickets before taking a catch to break a stand of 100 between Brett D'Oliveira (37) and Ross Whiteley (65 not out).

The fifth-wicket pair held up Yorkshire's push for victory for 27 overs before Liam Plunkett removed D'Oliveira and later Ben Cox for four.

Left-hander Whiteley remains, having reached his best score of the Championship season, but it will take a mammoth effort from him and the lower order to save Worcestershire from defeat.

Confirmation of Jonny Bairstow's England recall came during Worcestershire's second innings

They began day three on 195-6 in their first innings and needing another 86 runs to avoid the follow on, but their chances of doing so appeared slim when they lost teenager Joe Clarke for a career-best 88 and then Joe Leach (27) inside the first hour of play.

Saeed Ajmal hit 37 off 30 balls, but seamer Tim Bresnan bowled the Pakistan spinner to leave Worcestershire 150 runs behind.

Bresnan made the initial breakthrough in the second innings, trapping Richard Oliver lbw before lunch, and wickets fell steadily after the interval.

Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow celebrated his England recall for the third Ashes Test against Australia with a catch to dismiss Tom Fell (23), one of two afternoon scalps for pace bowler Brooks.

D'Oliveira and Whiteley batted resolutely either side of tea, the latter making his first Championship half-century of the summer, but Plunkett's two late wickets swung the match heavily in Yorkshire's favour.
