England bowler Stuart Broad has backed Durham seamer Mark Wood to replace the injured James Anderson for the fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.

Yorkshire's Liam Plunkett and Mark Footitt of Derbyshire have also been named in the 14-man squad for the match, which starts on Thursday.

But Broad said: "For me, if [Wood] is fit, he plays at Trent Bridge."

Wood, 25, played in the first two Tests but suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Steven Finn at Edgbaston.

"I'm a big fan of Woody," Broad added in his Mail on Sunday column., external "I love how hard he works and how much he enjoys the game."

Wood has a strong first-class record at Trent Bridge, but his Test bowling average of 39.21 is inferior to Plunkett's 37.46.

Broad also revealed that England - who lead the five-match series 2-1 after their victory at Edgbaston and will regain the Ashes with a win in Nottingham - have sacrificed a day off to aid their preparations.

"We had a three-day Test match so we had the option of taking tomorrow [Monday] off," Broad said.

"We're getting together at Trent Bridge tomorrow to have a day of extra training to make sure we're bang on the money."

Anderson says he is "hopeful" of being fit for the fifth Test at the Oval beginning on 20 August.
