County Championship: Andrew Salter best boosts Glamorgan

Andrew Salter struck eight fours in his 73 not out

Glamorgan's Andrew Salter hit a career-best 73 to frustrate Gloucestershire's bowlers on the first day of the Championship match at St Helen's.

The hosts were 146-7 when Jacques Rudolph fell for 68, but Salter shared an unbroken stand of 85 with Kieran Bull as Glamorgan closed on 271-8.

Salter batted for more than two hours, while Bull faced 102 balls for his 21 in his first game of the season.

Liam Norwell was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers, taking 3-71.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Glamorgan lost Will Bragg in the first over and wickets continued to tumble throughout the first two sessions despite Rudolph's resolute 149-ball innings.

However, 22-year-old Salter and Bull, 20, batted with maturity beyond their years after tea to give the hosts a chance of scoring more than 300.

"I thought we worked quite well together, tried to keep it simple and I think Bully did a great job when the new ball came on.

"It was tough and it was nipping off the pitch, so there were good signs for us in that aspect.

"It's a bit of a weird one because you face some balls and they spin and bounce, and you think 'this is tricky'.

"But I'm looking forward to bowling on it myself, and hopefully Bully and me can get some wickets."
