Division One strugglers Hampshire fought back after a slow start to their first innings against Warwickshire on day one at the Ageas Bowl.
It looked as if the hosts would struggle after Chris Woakes removed Jimmy Adams and James Vince early on.
But Adam Wheater and Joe Gatting shared a sixth-wicket partnership of 92 to help turn Hampshire's fortunes around.
Gareth Berg added an unbeaten 42 after coming in at number eight for Hampshire as they finished the day on 255-8.
It was a difficult day for Hampshire, who remain rooted to the foot of the Division One table and are in desperate need of points as the final weeks of the season approach.
After winning the toss and electing to bat on a wicket which was being used for the first time this season, Hampshire suffered a tough time.
The hosts' top order was undone by Warwickshire's fast bowlers as Woakes (2-19) and Boyd Rankin (3-45) helped to reduce Hampshire to 85-4.
But Wheater and Gatting's stand gave a much-needed revival to what had been a slow-paced start to their innings as they helped to cross the 200-run mark.
