County Championship: Compton ton puts pressure on Yorkshire

Nick Compton and Toby Roland-Jones hit centuries as Middlesex gave themselves a chance of a remarkable win over newly crowned champions Yorkshire at Lord's.

The home side, all out for 106 in their first innings, reached 573-8 to lead by 380 with one day's play remaining.

Compton, who hit 20 fours in his 149, shared stands of 150 and 87 with James Franklin (63) and John Simpson (47).

Roland-Jones (103 not out) and James Harris (67 not out) then added 146 as Yorkshire toiled in vain.

Having trailed by 193 on first innings, victory for Middlesex over unbeaten Yorkshire would arguably be even more impressive than last summer's seven-wicket triumph on the same ground against the White Rose county, when they scored 472-3 in the fourth innings.

Resuming on 274-5, they soon lost Franklin lbw to Ryan Sidebottom, whose three wickets in the opening over of the game effectively sealed their title success.

Compton's century arrived off 178 balls to give England's selectors food for thought before they pick the squad to face Pakistan in the UAE later this year, and he went on to his highest score of the season before he was lbw to spinner James Middlebrook (3-130).

Adam Lyth claimed the only other wicket to fall during the day, winning an lbw decision against Simpson shortly before tea, but Roland-Jones and Harris dominated the final session.

They broke the county's previous ninth-wicket record stand against Yorkshire when they passed the 128 shared by Bernard Bosanquet and Richard More at Sheffield in 1904, and Roland-Jones reached a maiden century with a six and a four from successive Jack Leaning deliveries in the day's final over.
