After a delayed start Northants elected to bowl, with opener Richard Levi absent with a finger injury.
They gave a Championship debut to Richard Gleeson, who made his sole previous first-class appearance in the tour match against Australia.
James Kettleborough (16) edged Rory Kleinveldt (1-12) behind before heavy rain ended the day with Glamorgan 23-1.
