Former England opening batsman Marcus Trescothick struck an unbeaten 210 as Somerset secured maximum batting points in their draw with Sussex at Hove.

It was the 39-year-old's third century of the season and his highest first-class score since 2011.

Trescothick resumed on 53 after Wednesday's washout and recorded his 58th century, with Peter Trego adding his second hundred of the year.

It lifted Somerset two points above Sussex into sixth in the table.

Victory for either side would have all-but erased any concerns of a drop to Division Two, but Sussex travel to Yorkshire for next week's final match of the season with Somerset at home to Warwickshire, with both still in danger.

The visitors resumed on 114-2 and Trescothick extended his third-wicket partnership with James Hildreth to 174, Hildreth (58) recording his eighth half-century of the campaign, as Sussex went wicketless in the morning session.

England bowler Chris Jordan struck in consecutive overs to remove Hildreth and Jim Allenby, but there was no further success for the home side as Somerset passed Sussex's first innings total and then declared on 438-4 after 100 overs, at which point the teams shook hands on a draw.

There was a presentation and a guard of honour for Sussex's former England all-rounder Michael Yardy in his final match at Hove.

The 34-year-old is retiring at the end of the season having represented the county for 15 years.
