Nick Browne hit a career-best 255 as Division Two leaders Essex took control on day two against Derbyshire.

Browne added 101 to his overnight 154 and extended his fourth-wicket stand with Dan Lawrence to 210 as Essex declared on 538-7 at Chelmsford.

Teenager Lawrence scored his second first-class century before he was bowled by Chesney Hughes for 116.

Openers Hughes and Billy Godleman put on 65, but both fell as the visitors closed on 124-2, trailing by 414 runs.

Essex bowler Aaron Beard, who starred in the tour match against Sri Lanka, took his first County Championship wicket as he bowled Godleman for 43.
