Shiv Thakor hit a Championship career-best 130 as Derbyshire piled on the runs against Kent.
Thakor and Tom Taylor shared a 150-run eighth-wicket partnership before Taylor was caught at cover by Matt Coles off Adam Ball for his highest score of 80.
James Tredwell had Thakor stumped and Coles (5-116) bowled Tony Palladino as Derbyshire were bowled out for 492.
Sean Dickson and Joe Denly helped Kent to 79-1 at the close, trailing by 413 runs as rain ended play at 17:20 BST.
