Ireland ease past Papua New Guinea in Women's World T20 Qualifier warm-up

Gaby Lewis chalked up a third T20 half-century in a month for Ireland

Gaby Lewis' unbeaten 56 helped Ireland to an eight-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in a Rotterdam warm-up for the ICC Women's World Twenty20 Qualifier.

Ireland restricted Papua New Guinea to 106-4 with Lucy Reilly taking two wickets, while there were one apiece for Laura Delany and Eimear Richardson.

Lewis helped Ireland comfortably reach their target with 50 balls to spare, after opener Clare Shillington made 37.

Ireland's first group game is against Thailand on Saturday.

They then face Scotland (8 July) and Uganda (10 July) in the Netherlands tournament, from which the top two teams qualify for the Women's World T20 in the West Indies in November.

Although the Papua New Guinea warm-up did not have full international status, it was the third international side against which Lewis has scored a T20 half-century in the last month.

Scotland struggle in warm-up

In Thursday's other Rotterdam warm-up game, Scotland - who are bidding to qualify for their first major ICC event- struggled badly against Bangladesh, who are one of the favourites to progress to the tournament proper.

Having won the toss, the Scots slumped from 35-1 to 47 all out, with only Lorna Jack (11) and Rachel Scholes (16) reaching double figures - while Bangladesh leg-spinner Fahima Khatun recorded remarkable bowling figures of three wickets for one run in three overs.

Scotland's Kathryn Bryce took a wicket with the third ball of the Bangladesh innings, but the Tigers easily knocked off their target within 10 overs for a nine-wicket victory.

There were also wins for United Arab Emirates and Thailand over Uganda and the Netherlands respectively in the other two warm-up games, played in Voorburg.
