Glamorgan's bowlers were given a thorough test as the students of Cardiff UCCE reached 226-6 on the first day of their Sophia Gardens friendly.

Veteran seamer Michael Hogan took 2-25 in 15 economical overs while spinner Callum Taylor also claimed two wickets.

But Steven Reingold (68) and Lorenzo Machado (73) batted for more than three hours apiece to give the students a solid start.

Both players have represented Glamorgan at second-team level.

Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie made a first red-ball appearance for Glamorgan deputising for Australian star Marnus Labuschagne, but spent most of the day fielding at slip in the sunshine.

Left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy made his first team debut, but could not get among the wickets.

Glamorgan also face Somerset away in a friendly before opening their Championship season in Yorkshire on Thursday, 8 April.

Australia international Labuschagne and fellow Queensland player Michael Neser are to miss the first four games because of delays in the Australian domestic season.
