Somerset (2 pts) beat Glamorgan by 74 runs |
Somerset earned a place in the T20 Blast last eight as they thrashed Glamorgan by 74 runs at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
A target of 182 proved far too demanding for the struggling home side who finished on 107 all out.
Somerset's bowlers all performed well with rookie spinner Lewis Goldsworthy taking three for 14.
New Zealand's Devon Conway made 70 not out in the visitors' 181 for five, with Roman Walker claiming three for 15.
Somerset will now have a home tie in the last eight if they beat Gloucestershire in their final match in Taunton on Sunday 18 July, while Glamorgan have to dissect a lacklustre campaign.
Somerset got off to a flying start with the help of extras from some wayward bowling, but were pegged back by the career-best performance from Walker, who claimed three wickets in successive overs.
They still had enough wickets in hand to throw the bat in the final five overs, which produced 66 runs as Tom Lammonby hammered 34 off 20.
Conway also accelerated in the closing stages after going at a run a ball for much of his innings and Somerset's total looked very competitive.
Acting skipper Craig Overton led from the front with three tight overs in the powerplay, including the wicket of Colin Ingram who was caught and bowled for 18.
Somerset backed up their bowlers with some excellent fielding, as Roelof van der Merwe took a stunning catch at mid-wicket to get rid of danger-man Marnus Labuschagne for 19 off the bowling of Marchant de Lange.
But it was the spinners who tied Glamorgan in knots as Goldsworthy also took key wickets in his superb spell, Jack Leach took two for 32 in a rare T20 outing and van der Merwe (three for 20) finished off Glamorgan's paltry effort, with Dan Douthwaite's 25 the top score.
Somerset have seven wins from 11 completed games to ensure a top-four spot, despite missing Lewis Gregory and Tom Banton on England duty, while Glamorgan have three from 11.
Somerset captain Craig Overton said:
"It was our most complete T20 performance of the season. Devon Conway has played beautifully for us and he did it again tonight, we've stuck with Tom Lammonby and he did very well, and we capitalised in the last four overs.
"With our three spinners we managed to squeeze them in the middle overs, everyone bowled really well and took their catches.
"After the first few games we'd have bitten your hand off for a quarter-final spot, now if we beat Gloucestershire we'll get a home quarter-final and knock them out which I'm sure will please Somerset fans.
"it was nice for me to play the three games with England, but it's massive for us to get a quarter-final spot and hopefully we can get a full side out."
Glamorgan captain Chris Cooke told BBC Sport Wales:
"We were a little bit flat in the first few overs when we came out to field and it spiralled from there, so apologies to all the fans who came out tonight, though Roman Walker has been brilliant and he was outstanding again.
"(Facing) spin in the middle overs has been our Achilles heel in this competition so we need to sort that out over the winter.
"A lot of our experienced guys haven't stepped up and it makes it difficult to go on a run when the batsmen aren't performing."
