County Championship: Ben Slater guides Nottinghamshire to win over Yorkshire

Ben Slater is Nottinghamshire's leading Championship run scorer this season with 837

Ben Slater made an unbeaten 79 to steer Nottinghamshire to a five-wicket win over Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.

Set a target of 174 to win, they lost four wickets after resuming on 42-1, but Slater guided them home on 174-5.

However, Warwickshire's victory over Somerset to become county champions meant that Notts finished third in the Division One table.

And it also cost them a place in next week's Bob Willis Trophy final when Warwickshire will face Lancashire.

Having failed to win any red-ball games in 2019 or 2020, Notts achieved seven victories this season and their total of 73 points in Division One put them just 0.5 behind Lancashire, who beat Hampshire on Thursday

Ben Duckett beat Slater - who was dropped on 19 - to 50 at the start of play, reaching his half-century with a paddle sweep for four off Dom Bess.

But a loose drive away from his body on 54 saw him play on to Jordan Thompson and he swished his bat over the bails in annoyance before walking off.

Joe Clarke (10) skied a catch to mid-off to give Bess a wicket and Ben Coad (3-58) bowled Steven Mullaney for nine as Notts reached lunch on 149-4.

Tom Moores was caught at mid-wicket off Coad following the resumption, but Slater was unmoved and able to watch from the other end as Liam Patterson-White clipped Bess away for the winning boundary.

"For us it was all about finishing the season with a win and thankfully we managed that with a satisfying performance.

"Unfortunately we can't finish first but we did what we had to do in winning the game.

"The way Ben Duckett played last night, taking a decent chunk out of what we needed, set things up nicely for today.

"For me, it was nice to be there not out at the end to win a game, which doesn't happen that often for an opening batter."

Yorkshire head coach Andrew Gale:

"It's just taken the gloss off what I would think has been a decent season - to be in the hunt two weeks ago to win the Championship, and then lose two in a row.

"If I'm being honest, I don't think the lads were quite on it this week.

"After the disappointment of the week before, we didn't just want to turn up and go through the motions, but it felt like that at times.

"We did well to take it into the fourth day after getting bowled out for 73 first innings. We did what we usually do, fight back hard and give ourselves a chance, but it was just too late in the game."
