So there we have it - one of the most exciting and dramatic County Championship title races in memory.

Not everyone might have liked the format brought in for this season, but it certainly delivered a thrilling finale both today and indeed this week.

It's Warwickshire then who are crowned County Champions for 2021 and we congratulate them all wholeheartedly.

As mentioned - we've still got more domestic cricket coverage on the way for you in the next week, starting tomorrow at Northampton.

In the meantime - be sure to check out the counties page of the BBC Sport website and app for more reaction and analysis.

We're not done yet with this domestic season....

Starting on Saturday, we've not two more pieces of silverware up for grabs.

First up, it's the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy final from Northampton between holders Southern Vipers and last year's runners-up Northern Diamonds.

There's live radio commentary of that 50-over match on the BBC Sport website and app from 10:45 BST.

Then from Tuesday, it's off to Lord's for the five-day Bob Willis Trophy final between Champions Warwickshire and runners-up Lancashire.

At 26, Will Rhodes is quite young to be a captain but he has shown his leadership skills today.

He led from the front brilliantly with the bat, setting the template of how to approach the morning as they crashed 115 runs in just 15 overs.

But Rhodes wasn't afraid to give Somerset a tempting declaration target of 273 off 79 overs so he could give his bowlers enough overs to take ten wickets.

And with every member of his five-man bowling attack in the wickets, he had the sense of who to throw the ball to in order for something to happen.

Made in Yorkshire, Rhodes is a guaranteed Bear for life after today.

I read a report this morning that Warwickshire would need a near-perfect performance if they were going to win today and that is more or less what they have delivered.

They needed quick runs this morning to give themselves the maximum amount of time to bowl Somerset out this afternoon, on a pitch that seemed pretty hard work to get wickets throughout this game.

They batted furiously this morning to set the target, left themselves 79 overs to bowl and, in front of a crowd that, given free entry, grew throughout the day, they have done it with a fair bit of time to spare.

It is their first title since 2012 and a fine achievement for a young team that has got to this point rather quicker than they thought they were going to.

What were we saying about fans of other counties having a grumble or two?

  9. Blood, sweat, tears - and glory for Warwickshirepublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire win the County Championship

The T20 Blast was good. The Hundred burst onto the scene with fireworks and flashing lights. The England v India series was exciting, undulating and controversial.

And then there is the County Championship. From shivering spring mornings to soft autumnal sunshine, it rumbles along.

It's six months of long, hard graft for batters and bowlers alike. But it's that effort and perspiration which makes it the title that county players want to win the most.

We began the week with four teams still in with a chance and it took the final session of the final match to decide the outcome. That tells you that it is a fine competition and one that should be cherished.

Fans of other counties may have their grumbles, but Warwickshire are top of the pile, and they deserve it.

Speaking of the Bob Willis Trophy, we now know who will be heading to Lord's next week.

Warwickshire, of course, will line up against the team they have just pipped to the title, Lancashire.

It won't be the same obviously, but maybe revenge will be in the air for the Red Rose.
