Somerset and former England wicketkeeper Steven Davies will retire at the end of the season.

The former Worcestershire player, who joined Somerset from Surrey in 2016, has only featured in two County Championship games in 2023, following the emergence of young James Rew.

Davies, 37, who played eight ODIs and five T20 games for England, has scored 14,298 runs in first-class cricket.

"I feel that now is the right time for me to retire," said Davies.

"I always said to the club that as soon as we get the right person in place to take over, I would step aside and let them get their exposure and learning done while they are young.

"I think we can all agree that Somerset are in safe hands with Rewy behind the stumps."

Davies, from Kidderminster, began his career with the Pears in 2004, made his Championship debut in 2005 and then played T20 for the first time in 2006.

In total he has played over 600 matches - 254 in first-class cricket, 197 in List A and 153 in T20.
