Ollie Nightingale: Guernsey Cricket name new captain

Ollie Nightingale has played in 12 T20 internationals in the last two years

Ollie Nightingale has been appointed as Guernsey's new cricket captain.

The 28-year-old batter is returning to the island in March having been leading Jersey side St Ouen.

He succeeds Josh Butler as skipper of the national side and has been a mainstay of the Guernsey international team for a number of years.

"I can't wait to move back to the island full-time and throw myself into the captaincy," Nightingale said after he was appointed.

"Hopefully we can build on the progress we made last year, we had a really good trip to Holland beating Germany and also played good cricket beating some strong teams throughout the summer.

"These wins should give guys confidence as we move forward.

"It is an exciting time for all involved in Guernsey cricket and hopefully, between the coaches and I, we can ensure we create an environment for success both this season and into the future."

Guernsey will host a qualifying tournament for the 2026 T20 World Cup next summer as they aim to close the gap on neighbours Jersey, who have reached the last few Global Qualifiers.

"Ollie was an ever present in the Guernsey side last year and has been an important member of the team on and off the field," Guernsey director of cricket Jeremy Frith said.

"Rob Thompson (Guernsey manager) and I are very much looking forward to working with him through 2024 and beyond as we look to build on the progress of 2023.

"I know the players will be getting behind him as we plan for an exciting year of cricket and in particular the T20 World Cup qualifiers in Guernsey."
