Match scorecard

Yorkshire significantly boosted their promotion hopes as they completed a four-wicket County Championship Division Two win over leaders Sussex on the final morning at Scarborough.

Resuming on 28-2, the home side took exactly an hour to reach 103-6 to clinch a 21-point haul despite losing four wickets to off-spinner Jack Carson, who claimed career-best match figures of 9-120.

Opener Adam Lyth top-scored with 40 as Yorkshire claimed their third successive Championship victory, while consigning the league leaders to only a second defeat in 10 matches this season.

Yorkshire started this fixture in third place, 27 points behind Sussex, but are now only nine adrift with four rounds remaining.

Lyth set the tone in the day's third over when he took back-to-back boundaries off Jaydev Unadkat's left-arm seam before hitting two sixes in as many overs, as he pulled Carson over midwicket and cut England paceman Ollie Robinson over backward point.

Sussex actually started the day minus three on the over-rate, so it was no surprise to see Carson employed early by captain John Simpson in a bid to speed things up. Realistically, improving that was their main target for the day, and the visitors achieved it.

Although Lyth led the way for Yorkshire, he was helped out by nightwatchman Dan Moriarty, Yorkshire's regular number 11, who contributed 17 to a third-wicket partnership of 51.

After Moriarty was first to go, only seven more runs had been added when Carson had Lyth caught behind down legside at the second attempt by Simpson.

Only eight runs were needed when Carson trapped James Wharton lbw to bring in Jonny Bairstow, who holed out to deep midwicket for a two-ball duck - but there was no late twist as Tykes captain Jonny Tattersall hit the winning runs.

Both sides are back in home action on Thursday when Yorkshire host another of the promotion-contenders Middlesex in Leeds - and Sussex play bottom side Derbyshire at Hove.
